Dr. Roberts was born and educated in England. He received his Ph.D. from London's City University in 1990 where he worked with early multiprocessor systems, defining relationships between graph theory, parallel computation and visual programming. After moving to San Diego in 1991, he worked in the emergent multimedia industry, developing several multimedia authoring tools, including the architecture of Kinetix Hyperwire, real-time 3D and networking infrastructures. During this period he was also active in media hacking for various non-profit organizations such as the Surfrider foundation (1994).
Continuing non-profit efforts include work with the Earthtrust foundation on computer mediated human-dolphin communication. Previously at UrStudios, Inc., he continues to architect the Gel open source 3D system (a ground up write on cyberspace) at his new Gel-based startup 7F.com. His current research is mainly focused on problems related to dynamically routed network topologies and media distribution, as well as on friendly interfaces to the Gel system. He currently lives in LA with no cats and 3Mb/sec of low latency bandwidth. A continuing background thread is the relationship between choreography, dance and real-time 3D.
