Data
Data are everywhere. Facts or information utilized to calculate, analyze, or plan something - is data. And for research scientists, data forms the very pith of what they do. Data tells the story — we synthesize, process, and write about those stories and publish them in peer-reviewed journals, converse with colleagues, and present the information to the research community and public. The Proficiency in Ocean Data Science minor educates undergraduate students so they can contribute to ocean data-based investigation of ocean phenomena as they relate to advancing ocean science.

Case Study
Chariho Data Collection: Fast Facts- Four kayaks were outfitted with Hobo InTemp Data Loggers.
- Fifteen other kayaks accompanied the data collecting kayaks.
- Students were treated to instructor-led investigations of oyster farming, ocean water health, ecosystem biota, and data collection methods.
- Instructors watched closely to identify improvements that might be pursued for a better experience of URI undergraduates during data collection activities.
The resulting data are available as a Comma Separated Values (CSV) file. A chart of the data is shown to the right for the two sensors that continuously recorded reasonable data.
